The Arizona Court of Appeals heard arguments Thursday over whether an initiative that aims to reverse a sales tax increase by the City of Glendale can appear on the November ballot. 

The City of Glendale and a group trying to reverse a newly imposed tax increase are scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

As Glendale voters prepare to elect a new mayor for the first time in nearly two decades, and new city council members, the city is dealing with several major issues: the sale of the Phoenix Coyotes and payments to run the city-owned arena, and a controversial sales tax increase to name just a few. But, as KJZZ’s Mark Brodie reports, some business owners still seem upbeat about the city’s future.

This month, Glendale voters are starting the process of electing the city’s first new mayor in almost 20 years. And, as KJZZ’s Mark Brodie reports, the three candidates running for the top job will inherit several significant issues facing the West Valley city.

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge will hear arguments Monday morning on whether an initiative to ask voters to repeal a Glendale sales tax increase should be on November's ballot.

Glendale has rejected the signatures turned in by critics of the city’s deal with the prospective new owner of the Phoenix Coyotes. They’d wanted to give city voters a chance to overturn the 20-year, $324 million lease agreement. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie reports.

Several candidates running for the Glendale City Council say they oppose the city’s Jobing.com arena management agreement with the Phoenix Coyotes. On Monday, the group submitted a letter to city officials asking them to stop the deal. 

The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill that aims to stop a planned casino in the West Valley. The measure allows the Tohono O’Odham Nation to develop the land it bought near 91st and Northern Avenues, but prohibits putting a casino there. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie reports.

The Glendale City Council is expected to vote Friday on an agreement with the potential new owner of the Phoenix Coyotes.  Under the deal, the city would pay Greg Jamison more than $300 million over 20 years to improve and manage Jobing.com Arena.
