Fats Waller was an entertainer, composer and brilliant pianist. Waller was one of the most popular performers of his era, finding critical and commercial success in the US and in Europe. He was a prolific songwriter and many of his songs like Honeysuckle Rose, Squeeze Me, and Ain't Misbehavin' have become jazz standards.  Celebrate Fats Waller's birthday Monday night on the 9 O'clock Special and enjoy the music of this great American composer played by Diana Krall, Miles Davis and Red Garland.

  Pianist Ramsey Lewis is more than Wade in the Water.  He started playing piano at 4 in his hometown of Chicago and had his own jazz band at 15.  In the 60s he had 3 huge pop hits with his piano trio, The In Crowd, Hang on Sloopy, and Wade in the Water.  All three went gold and made Ramsey Lewis a star.  He is still a jazz musician and has done his own radio and television programs focusing on jazz.   Tonight get in  the groove when we'll be cookin' with the Mighty Burner,  jazz organist Charles Earland.  Born in Philadelphia, Earland toured and recorded on his Hammond B-3 organ for 30 years.  Enjoy the fun and the joyful spirit of Charles Earland tonight on the 9 Oclock special.

9 O'clock New Release Jazz Special for 5/15/12

  Hear the latest new jazz tonight on KJZZ.  There's a reissue of some smokin' sax by Stanley Turrentine, and a romantic sweet sound from singer Melody Gardot's new CD.  All new releases tonight at 9.

  Pianist Red Garland started on sax but by his teens he found his sound in the piano.  He played for Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane and then led his own trio for many years.  Hear the unique chordal harmony that made him famous when we feature Red Garland tonight on the 9 O'clock Special. Jazz awakes tonight at 8.

Monday night Special

Monday night Blaise celebrates her birthday by playing some of her favorites!  Hear classic jazz from Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else, and songs by Gershwin, Cole Porter and Horace Silver.  You'll hear some bossa nova by Stan Getz and some sweet swing by the Basie band.  Join Blaise for a jazz birthday party Monday night when jazz awakes at 8.

  Irving Berlin's songs have reached the top of the charts 25 times and have been recorded by  Ethel Merman, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald.  His music has become part of the American Songbook and jazz artists like Jjohn Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie have put a whole new spin on his tunes.  Hear Cheek to Cheek, Blue Skies Always and more tonight when we feature Irving Berlin by the jazz giants on the 9 O'clock Special.

  Self taught guitarist Jimmy Ponder started playing guitar in the 50s and was influenced by Wes Montgomery.  He has worked with Lou Donaldson and Jimmy McGriff and laid down some tracks with Houston Person. Whether he is with an organ trio or a horn quartet you'll enjoy the groove bluesy improvisation of guitar master Jimmy Ponder tonight on the 9 O'clock Special. 

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 5/8

Pianist Keith Jarrett creates his own mood when he plays.  His sense of harmony and beauty gives his sound an atmospheric quality.  Jarrett has inluenced many young artists and is still creating new ideas.  Hear some classic Keith Jarrett tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.
