David Newman started his career as a blues and R & B horn player working alongside Ray Charles.  After playing for Ray and others for 10 years he evolved into a soulful jazz artist with his own sound and his own band.  Hear both sides of David "Fathead" Newman tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 2/16

  Tonight you will meet the future of jazz piano with two of the finest pianists performing today. Benny Green, born in 1965 in California  has the history of jazz at his fingertips. In his teens he was with Eddie Henderson, and later he recorded with Ray Brown and Art Blakey. Today he has his own world class trio. Tamir Hendleman born in Israel in 1972 was winning awards at 14.  He has accompanied singers  Barbara Streisand and Natalie Cole and works with Jeff Hamilton's trio and big band.  Hear the different styles of two of the best tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 2/15

 Arizona Mardi Gras?  Find out where and when tonight when Benjie Messer stops by to talk about his brass band on the 9 O'clock Special.  The new CD by Jeff Hamilton's trio is swinging like crazy and you will love it.  Plus hear Paul McCartney working with Diana Krall and John Pizzarelli on his latest release.

Some of the best jazz tunes start with Romance, "My Funny Valentine" by Miles Davis, "My Romance" by Ella, "You Are Too Beautiful" by John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman and Tony Bennett's latest "Night and Day" with Amy Winehouse.  Hear these and more tonight on our Valentine's Day Special starting at 8 tonight.  Whether you are in love,  or just in love with jazz,  you will be caressed by the sounds of the jazz giants tonight at 8. 

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 12/13

This weekend the music industry chooses who they think made the best recordings this year. Who will win?  Tony Bennett?  Barbara Streisand? Find out who won in the jazz categories when I feature the Grammy winners and some of the losers Monday night on the 9 O'clock special.  Listen to the best of 2011 and see if you agree with the choices.  It's Grammy fever Monday night  on K-Jazz.  Jazz awakes at 8.

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 2/10

  Including all of our local talented performers, Arizona is chock full of jazz this February. The Brubeck brothers, pianist Benny Green, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, the Ellington Orchestra and Chicago guitarist Bobby Broom will all make an appearance here during Arizona's Centennial month. Tonight get a taste of some of the fine talent performing here this month, including a little Arizona Mardi Gras.  That's tonight on the 9 O'clock Special. 

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 2/9

Tonight is a swingin special! You'll hear the Ellington orchestra from the 40s to today, in honor of their concert this Saturday at Scottsdale Center for the Arts.  Plus the Manhattan Dolls will stop by to talk about vocal swing and their 3 part vocal group in the tradition of the Andrews Sisters.  The Dolls are singing all across Arizona from Prescott and Peoria to Tucson and Green Valley this week.

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 2/7

Chicago guitarist Bobby Broom loves playing his bluesy jazz style with his group, The Deep Blue Organ Trio.  They will be here in town this Saturday night for a performance at the Rhythm Room.  Tonight I'll feature Bobby Broom and I'll give away his latest CD with The Deep Blue Organ trio, "Wonderful".  Tune in to win a CD tonight on the 9 O'clock Special. 

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 2/6

Legendary jazz drummer, Jimmy Cobb, is  a superb, mostly self-taught musician.  Jimmy's inspirational work with Miles, John Coltrane, and Cannonball Adderly in the 50s and 60s includes the masterpieces "Kind of Blue", "Sketches of Spain", "Someday My Prince will Come", and many, many other watershed Miles Davis and Coltrane recordings.  Jimmy Cobb is an NEA jazz master and continues to take jazz all over the world.   Hear the history of jazz when we feature Jimmy Cobb Monday night on the 9 O'clock special.
