9 O'clock Jazz Special for 2/3

  Tenor sax man Stan Getz is in a class by himself.  His nickname was "the sound" for the beautiful lyrical tone that came out of his horn.  He was known as a brilliant improvisor and sightreader.  Getz's perfect pitch and supernatural memory made him a shining star in the jazz universe.  His solos are still studied and his sound has never been matched.  Best known for bringing the bossa nova to the world in the 60s, his career spanned 40 years of bebop and bossa nova.  Hear the many sides of Stan Getz tonight on the 9 o'clock Special.

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 1/31

 Vibe player Bobby Hutcherson is not as well known as Milt Jackson or Lionel Hampton, but he is the bridge to today's contemporary players.  His adventurous harmonic ideas and positive attitude led players like Joe Locke and Stefon Harris in new directions.  Hear Hutcherson from his early bluesy recordings with Grant Green to his own imaginative work with Renee Rosness in 2007.  It's a good vibe tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 1/30

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band keeps traditional jazz alive.  You can go to New Orleans and travel back to the 1920s with this delightful band that has created an atmosphere of fun and good jazz for over 50 years.  Young players come to join veterans in a blending of banjos and trumpets that started a revolution in music.  They will be performing at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts  this week and Monday night you can tap your toes to the sound of the Preservation Hall jazz Band on the 9 O'clock Special on KJZZ.

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 1/27

  One of the worlds' favorite composers is Antonio Carlos Jobim.  Best known for The Girl from Ipanema, this Brazillian composer has written hundreds of wonderful melodies, Meditation, Corcovado, Waters of March, that have brought bossa nova and samba to many countries.  Tonight hear jazz artists like Chic Corea nad Stan Getz play the music of Jobim tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.

  Vocalist Tony Bennett started in the shadow of Frank Sinatra, and then created his own unique style and sound that has made him, at 85, one of the best loved vocalists alive today.  His latest CD features more duets with friends and tonight  we'll hear Tony talk about what it ws like to sing with  Lady Gaga, Aretha Franklin, Michael Buble, and Amy Winehouse who joined Tony for this latest Grammy nominated CD.  Hear the inside story of Tony Bennett's latest release tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 1/20

The son of Greek Immigrants, Ioannis Veliotis took the name Johnny Otis and became the Godfather of R & B.  His dynamic bands foreshadowed Rock and Roll and pulled the blues into big band with a jazz flavor.  He discovered artists like Lil Esther and Etta James and created opportunities for many musicians. Johnny Otis passed away this week and tonight Blaise Lantana features the songs of Johnny Otis from the 40s and 50s tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.  jazz awakes at 8!

It's all new releases tonight with singer Leah Natale swingin easy and flutist Holly Hoffmann's quintet taking a new turn.  Don't miss drummer and jazz legend Jack DeJohnette smokin' as usual on his new release "Sound Travels".  Keep up with the latest in jazz tonight on the 9 O'clock Special on K-Jazz.  Jazz awakes at 8!

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 1/18

   John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk performed in a concert at Carnegie Hall.  It was a marvelous combination of talent but the tapes of the show were lost for years.  Recently they were found and the music was released on a new CD.  here at K-Jazz we've been playing this unique performance for you.  Tonight hear why jazz critics are so excited about finding this music and learn how the concert came together.  It's a special feature on John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.  Jazz awakes at 8.
