Pat Metheny

Guitarist Pat Metheny has always been an innovator.  Although he studied Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass, he is self taught and moved from straight ahead bebop to his own ethereal sound.  His style is unmistakable whether he plays alone, with an orchestra or with synthesizers.  Hear the many forms that Metheny takes when we feature his music tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.  Jazz awakes at 8!

Hank Jones

Jazz master Hank Jones lived from 1917 to 2010 and played music for over 75 years. He was the oldest in his musical family, with brothers Thad and Elvin following in his jazz footsteps.  Hear the eloquent lyrical style of pianist Hank Jones Monday night on the 9 O'clock special, and you'll be surprised at who he has played with.

Dexter Gordon

  Dexter Gordon is the comeback kid for all the times he restarted his career.  He came on the scene in the 40s with Billy Eckstein,  lost his way in the 50s and came back in the 60s with his own sound and style.  When he returned again in 1976 after living in Europe for a decade he got standing ovations from the crowds.  Hear why Dexter Gordon was so loved  tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.
