Classic Sax

New Releases Tonight!

      Tonight we'll be "Funkengruven"  with a 16 year old wunderkind who loves drivin' a B3, and then we will chill "Within a Song" with John Abercrombie  and Joe Lovano on a new ECM release.  Finally, Christian Scott, NOLA trumpeter has a new name and a hot new Mardi Gras Indian vibe on his latest project. Don't miss the fun tonight on the 9 O'clock special.  

Billy Taylor

Pianist, composer and teacher Billy Taylor is known for his jazz TV and radio shows, but he is also a lengendary pianist.  As house pianist at Birdland in the 1940s he played with Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis.  Hear Billy Taylor's music tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.

Charles McPherson

  Born in Joplin Missouri and raised in Detroit, Charles McPherson was a disciple of Charlie Parker but added his own sound to the bebop language.  His sax can be heard on the film "Bird" and on recordings with Charles Mingus.  Dig the sound and spirit of Charles McPherson Monday night on the 9 O'clock Special on K-Jazz. 

Dmitri Matheny

Horn player and composer Dmitri Matheny stops by K-Jazz tonight to talk about his music and how he fell in love with the sound of the flugelhorn.  We'll listen to some of the finest flugerhorn players and get the inside scoop on what makes them so unique.  Dmitri Matheny and the flugelhorn tonight on the 9 O'clock special.

9 O'clock New Release Jazz Special

  Bassist Brian Bromberg is always one step ahead of the curve creating sounds that you don't expect from a bass.  His new CD features his unique piccolo bass on tunes by Jobim.  Plus we'll hear baritone singer Ori Dagan, who does a stylin' version of Sweet Georgia Brown, and even wrote a song about being Googleable.  It's a fun night of new CDs tonight on the 9 o'clock Special.

Cal Tjader

  Cal Tjader started out as a kid tap dancing with his parents in the traveling family act . He then played drums with Dave Brubeck, and George Shearing before he taught himself to play the vibes.  Tjader fell in love with Latin Jazz and never looked back.  Enjoy Cal Tjader and his Latin Jazz bands tonight on the 9 O'clock Special. 

Lee Morgan

  Trumpeter Lee Morgan's life was short, he was shot at the age of 33 while at a gig.  But Morgan played with so many great artists and wrote so many tunes that are standards today, that his legacy is long and strong.  Hear the sound of Lee Morgan  tonight with McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey, Hank Mobley and more.  The sound of Lee Morgan tonight on the 9 O'clock Special. 

Louis Jordan

Louis Jordan could swing, and rock,  play sax and sing.  His unique style was the beginning of rock and roll.  Hear his tunes from the 40s like Let the Good Times Roll and Ain't that Just like a Woman.   It's a fun night with the songs of Louis Jordan tonight on the 9 O'clock special.

Jazz Special for Friday

Johnny Hartman's voice was so unique and beautiful that he was the only singer that John Coltrane wanted to record with.  Hear Hartman with Coltrane's quartet and with his own big bands and find out what makes his sound so special tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.
