New Release Special for 7/03/12

Tonight hear the latest from guitarist/composer Grant Geisman who covers all the bases on his new release Bop! Bang! Boom!  Singer Connie Evingson takes on the lyrical genius of Norman Gimbel and singer Kevin Mahogany takes us to Kansas City for some blues with a B3 trio.  Good fun and great variety tonight on the 9 O'clock New Release Special. 

Ahmad Jamal

Ahmad Jamal has a unique flavor to his playing.  Miles Davis wanted all his pianists to sound like Ahmad.  Today Jamal  tours with his own trio and creates brilliant improvisations over jazz standards like Blue Moon, and his own compositions.  Hear the history of Ahmad Jamal from Poinciana to today, Monday night on the 9 O'clock special. 

Richard Rogers

  Whether he was writing with Larry Hart or Oscar Hammerstein, Richard Rogers wrote 900 beautiful melodies that were easy to listen to and fun to play.  Jazz musicians love his harmonies and melodic invention and bring a whole new light to Rogers wonderful tunes.  Tonight delight in Blue Moon, My Romance, My Favorite Things, My Funny Valentine, and  Where or When done by everyone from John Coltrane to Ray Charles. 

New Releases Tonight!

   Smoky voiced singer Cassandra Wilson's new CD is so atmospheric it takes you to another country, and that country is Italy.   We'll also travel with saxaphonist Javon Jackson to a Lucky 13, and hear Branford Marsalis and his band, "Playin' Tunes".  It's a fun night of new releases and you just might fall in love with someone you never heard before.  Jazz awakes tonight at 8.

Jazz Special for Tuesday 6/26

  Whether playing drums or vibes, the skill and vast musicality of Joe Chambers is unmistakable.  Although he considers Max Roach his mentor and inspiration, his sound and ideas are all his own.  Enjoy the diversity of Joe Chambers with Woody Shaw, Wayne Shorter and his own combos tonight on the 9 O'clock Special. 

Donald Harrison

  Saxaphonist Donald Harrison comes from a New Orleans Indian Blues tradition with bebop chops that he showed off with the Jazz Messengers.  His knowledge of jazz shines in his playing, and his creative artistic energy is just unstoppable.  Enjoy the talent and spirit of Donald Harrison Monday night on the 9 O'clock Special.

Classics

  With Muddy Waters and Bo Diddly, Chess Records is best known for blues and Rock n Roll.  Their jazz output will surprise you when you hear Ahmad Jamal's "Poinciana", The Jazztet's "Killer Joe", Etta James' "At Last",  and more classics  recorded on Chess Records' jazz label.  Don't miss the history of Chess Jazz tonight on the 9 o'clock Special.  Jazz awakes at 8.

Special for 6/20

Tonight keep up with what is new in jazz.  There's a fun new release with banjo player Bela Fleck and piano genius Marcus Roberts, and it's an eclectic and inspiring combination.  We'll hear the romantic Gypsy band, Pearl Django, back with more enchanting music on their new CD "Eleven" and some down home hard bop grooves from Detroit trombonist Curtis Fuller.  It's a wonderful variety of new music on the 9 O'clock Special tonight on K-Jazz. Jazz awakes tonight at 8.

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 6/19

If you ever get out and about to hear music in Arizona, you know we have some amazing and talented musicians here.  Tonight I'll feature some of Arizona's finest, including Dennis Rowland, Dmitri Matheny, Fred Forney, Beth Lederman and Dave Cook.  Hear how good your neighbors are and find out where you can go and hear them play, tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 6/18

  It's not a trumpet, it's not a trombone, it's got it's own unique sound and flavor and is loved by quite a few trumpeters. Monday night hear some masters of the Flugelhorn, Art Farmer, Clark Terry and Dmitri Matheny play the fat horn with the mellow sound tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.
