Pat Metheny

  Born in the midwest, Pat Metheny came from a trumpet playing family but just fell in love with the guitar.  He changed the entire repertoire of  guitar sounds used in jazz and created his own unique language and style.  Metheny recorded Grammy winning CDs solo, with his combos, and with orchestras.  Hear the other worldly tones of brilliant guitarist Pat Metheny tonight on the 9 o'clock Special.

Burrell & Jordan

  Kenny Burrell and Stanley Jordan are two distinctive jazz guitarists with very different styles.  Tuesday they both celebrate a birthday and we'll celebrate their music tonight on the 9 o'clock Special.  Hear a wonderful variety of music with classic bebopper Kenny Burrell and modern innovator Stanley Jordan tonight on K-Jazz. 

Double Header! Ray Charles and New Jazz Releases

It's a fun filled double header tonight! At 9, Blaise Lantana plays the lastest new jazz from young saxaphonist, Grace Kelly.  You'll hear the latest swinging B3 organ on Joey DeFrancesco's new CD, and guitarist Kenny Burrell says it all, solo on his latest release.  Start the jazz night at 8 with a Ray Charles party with "Georgia", "Busted", and a spirit filled "Another Saturday Night",  when Blaise gives away tickets to the Tempe Center for the Arts' Saturday Night Ray Charles show.  Tune in to win and to enjoy Brother Ray.

Guitarist Pat Martino began playing professionally at age 15. Martino played and recorded early in his career with musicians Jack McDuff and Jimmy Smith.  His smooth sounds and bluesy style are influenced by his growing up in Philadelphia where the guitar/organ trio thrives.

Pat Metheny is a unique self styled guitarist and brilliant innovator.  He has performed with everything from self powered synthesizers to symphony orchestras.  He started his career in 1975 with vibe player and mentor Gary Burton, and his latest album is solo guitar.  Hear the many sides of Pat Metheny Friday night on the 9 O'clock Special.

Guitarist Herb Ellis was born in Texas and grew up near Dallas.  Perhaps best known for his 1950s membership in the trio of pianist Oscar Peterson, Ellis was also a staple of west-coast recording sessions, and was  an excellent be-bop guitarist with a hint of country in his sound.  Ellis played with Jimmy Dorsey  in the 1940s, traveling and recording extensively, and playing in dance halls and movie palaces.  Learn more of the story and hear the distinctive sound of jazz guitarist Herb Ellis tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.

9 O'clock Jazz Special

According to Miles Davis and Kenny Clark, guitarist Charlie Christian was the originator of bebop who influenced Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.  His phrasing and improvisation were way ahead of their time. After he was discoverd by John Hammond, he recorded with Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton for only two years before he died of Tuberculoses at the age of 25.  Tonight Blaise Lantana features Charlie Christian and jazz guitar innovator, Joe Beck on the 9 O'clock Special.

K-Jazz 9 O'clock Jazz Special for 7/22

Guitarist Kenny Burrell has been playing and recording for over 50 years.  Tonight hear him in the 50s with Coltrane, in the 70s with Herbie Hancock and today with his band, including pianist Benny Green.  Cover the years with jazz guitar legend Kenny Burrell tonight on K-Jazz.
