Thousands of inmates at two California prisons may be removed from their current facility to protect them from Valley Fever.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said cases of Valley Fever in Arizona and some other Southwestern states rose dramatically between 1998 and 2011.

Some Arizonans who get a lung disease common in the Southwest are not being treated properly by their doctors. But, the University of Arizona and State Department of Health Services have joined efforts to train physicians who may not know a lot about Valley Fever. 

The official end of the Valley's monsoon season is two weeks away, but there still may be plenty of dust storms to come and more cases of Valley fever.

There were more than 16,000 reported cases of Valley Fever in Arizona last year and probably more than 30,000 unreported cases.
