Glendale council to vote on continuing casino lawsuit

The Glendale City Council will vote Tuesday night on whether to continue the city’s legal fight against a proposed casino nearby. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie has more.

MARK BRODIE: Earlier this month, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the Tohono O’Odham Nation, in its attempt to bring about 54 acres of land near 95th and Northern avenues into its reservation. The tribe wants to build a resort and casino on the unincorporated land. Glendale, the state and the Gila River Indian Community sued to challenge the Interior Department’s decision to take the land into trust, a step towards becoming part of the reservation. Tuesday night, the Glendale City Council is scheduled to decide whether to appeal the Ninth Circuit’s split decision. A city spokeswoman says that vote will not include a decision on whether to appeal to a larger panel of the Ninth Circuit, or to the U.S. Supreme Court. She says the city will continue to work with its partners to decide on the best course of action.
