The Valley Metro Board of Directors has approved a fare increase for public transit in the Phoenix area. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie reports.

MARK BRODIE: Starting on March first, it’ll cost a quarter more for local rides on the bus and light rail. Fares will increase by 50 cents for express and rapid transit. Valley Metro’s Susan Tierney says the extra money will help preserve and maintain current services.

SUSAN TIERNEY: Fares cover about 25 percent of the costs to operate a trip. So, at this rate of 25 cents for the base fare for local service, we will be able to maintain our service.

BRODIE: Tierney says Valley Metro’s operating costs go up three to four percent each year, and that this increase will help cover those expenses for the next several years. This is the first fare increase since 2009. But, Tierney says, as operating costs continue to rise, officials will likely have to look at potential fare increases in the future.
