Details about the Azores Islands:
The Azores island chain is part of Portugal. The nine volcanic islands are in the Atlantic Ocean about 900 miles from Lisbon, Portugal.
The National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations named the Azores as the world's second-most appealing island destination
You can explore saltwater fly-fishing, cycling in a seaside route, explore lava caves or taste the local cuisine including stewed octopus
One of the top 10 places for whale watching
The Azores' year-round mild climate is always between 57 and 71 degrees Farenheit
The Azores are home to Portugal's tallest mountain peak, the only tea plantations in Europe, dozens of crater lakes, miles of rocky coastlines, and some 6,000 pineapple plantations.
The landscape is varied and dramatic featuring rocky cliffs, crater lakes, geysers, waterfalls and lava caves. At the shore of Furnas Lake on the island of São Miguel, steam hisses out of a dozen geysers, offering a natural “oven” to cook food inside the caldeiras.
The lava-rich soils nurture more than 1,200 species of plants, flowers and trees.
Go Saltwater fly-fishing - Fish include the Atlantic Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Yellowfin, Big Eye Tuna, Swordfish, Blue Fish, Wahoo and Dorado, while shark species include Hammerheads, Six Gill and Mako.
Lava caves run for miles under the islands of Pico, Terceira, Graciosa and São Miguel. The cooling lava of past eruptions created these tube-like caves, and today those caves provide great adventure for a spelunker.
Cyclists of all kinds can find a route or a tour to suit their tastes. Options include backcountry roads, a mountain path or a seaside route. A dirt road traces the rim of a caldeira to the “Vista do Rei” (King’s View), overlooking the blue and green crater lakes of Sete Cidades (SevenCities).
