9 O'Clock Jazz Special for 7/12
By: Blaise Lantana on 07/12/2011
Hank Mobley, who was born in Georgia and raised near Newark, worked with Dizzy before he hooked up with the Jazz Messengers in the 50s. Although he recorded a number of sides for Blue Note, he was never as well known as his contemporaries John Coltrane and Stan Getz. Hear Hank's music tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.
He took part in one of the landmark hard bop sessions, with Art Blakey and Horace Silver for a classic recording, Horace silver and the Jazz Messengers. With Mobley's bluesy melodic grooves they contrasted with the cool jazz vibe happening on the west coast. Hear the brilliant ideas and solid sound of tenor sax player, Hank Mobley tonight at 9 on K-Jazz at 91.5 or on the web at kjzz.org.
