ASU enrollment surges past 73,000

The nation’s largest university just got bigger. As KJZZ’s Peter O’Dowd reports, Arizona State University enrollment topped 73,300 students.

PETER O’DOWD: This exceeds last year’s enrollment by more than 1,000. Even at this size, ASU Vice Provost Kent Hopkins says there’s no danger of watering down the educational experience.

KENT HOPKINS: I think ASU is at such a competitive advantage right now. If you take ASU and compare us with our sister state in California, we have courses available; students can graduate in four years. We see our size as a great advantage.

O’DOWD: Hopkins pointed out several other Fall 2012 enrollment highlights. The incoming freshman class has a high school G-P-A of 3.47, an all-time high. Foreign student enrollment is up. And for the first time, ASU held classes in Lake Havasu City. Seventy students are enrolled at the campus in Northwestern Arizona. ASU was the nation’s largest university by enrollment last school year. Officials won’t know if they keep that title until later this fall.
