Data from the U.S. Census Bureau show that the Native American and Alaska Native populations now number more than 5 million people in the United States. Five of the 10 largest American Indian reservations are in Arizona. 

The Navajo reservation in northern Arizona and New Mexico remains the largest reservation in the country. 286,000 people identified themselves in the census as Navajo tribal members.

The tribe has the largest population of “race alone” members, a category the census defines as belonging to one tribe.

The Cherokee tribe is the largest overall with 819,000 members including those who may also belong to other tribes or races.

Nationally this multi-tribal multi-racial category grew by 39 percent since the 2000 Census

Three quarters of all Native Americans live outside the tribal reservations.
