New apartments to cater to veterans

A new apartment complex in Phoenix will break ground tomorrow. But the Madison Pointe Apartment Homes project will be targeting a specific kind of resident. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie reports.

MARK BRODIE: The apartments will be near 7 th St. and Indian School, a few blocks from the VA. The complex is intended to offer affordable housing to military veterans and their families. Colonel Joey Strickland, Director of the state Department of Veterans’ Services says homelessness among veterans is a big problem. He believes this project will put a dent in that, but also says it’s just one project in one part of the state.

JOEY STRICKLAND: We’re gonna continue to work closely with the governor’s housing office, with non-profit organizations and our federal partners to take as many veterans off the street as we can, and to provide a safety net for their families.

BRODIE: Strickland says the unemployment rate among veterans in the U-S is between 9-13%. The 60-unit apartment complex is scheduled to open in the fall.
