The Arizona Senate on Monday will vote on a measure that would put new restrictions on new drivers. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie reports.
MARK BRODIE: The billwould prohibit drivers younger than 18 from using cell phones or other electronic devices for the first six months they’re behind the wheel, except in emergencies. The violation would be a secondary offense -- meaning police officers would have to pull the driver over for another reason. But violators would face fines, and more time of not being able to use their cell phones behind the wheel. This is the second time the senate will vote on this idea. Another version of this bill passed the senate in January on a 23-6 vote, but did not get a hearing in a house committee. Supporters say new drivers are more susceptible to distraction, and need to pay complete attention to the road. Critics, though, argue government shouldn’t be dealing with this kind of restriction.
