Glendale seeking reprieve from NHL for cost of Coyotes

The City of Glendale is asking the National Hockey League to give it a break. The city owes the league $25 million for the Phoenix Coyotes. The league bought the Coyotes at a bankruptcy auction in 2009. Glendale paid $25 million to the NHL last season to keep the team in Glendale. Then this season the city put $20 million in escrow and committed another $5 million. The Arizona Republic reports the payments have nearly drained the city’s reserves.
