Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox has won a $975,000 suit against Maricopa County. Wilcox sued Sheriff Joe Arpaio and former County Attorney Andrew Thomas over their failed investigations. She claimed they went after her because she opposed their illegal immigration policies. KJZZ’s Steve Goldstein reports.
Wilcox had sued the sheriff and former county attorney, but Maricopa County is stuck with the bill. A financial settlement was reached several weeks ago through mediation.
But the current County Attorney, Bill Montgomery, challenged that agreement because he said it did not meet state law.
At a hearing in federal court Friday afternoon, the county attorney backed down and the judge then approved the nearly $1 million settlement.
Meanwhile several other suits against the county are still unsettled, including one by County Supervisor Don Stapley, former Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Gary Donahoe and several other senior county administrators.
