National forest seeks sandbag volunteers this weekend

Officials at the Tonto National Forest are looking for volunteers to help protect a site near Sunflower from flooding. They need to create a sand bag barrier by the weekend. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Nadine Arroyo Rodriguez reports.

Hundreds of volunteers are needed to help fill and place 25,000 sand bags around the historic forest Sunflower Administration site. Officials say they need volunteers ages 16 and older on Saturday and Sunday.

The recent Sunflower fire burned more than 20,000 acres.

Officials are now concerned an unprecedented flooding will occur in the region and damage historic structures that have been in the area since the early 1900s. The Sunflower region is located 34 miles north of Phoenix.
