Congressman Habla Español At English-Only Bill Hearing
Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) speaks in Spanish while delivering his opening statement at a hearing on an English-only bill put forth by Republicans.
It seems to have evolved into a custom in every Congress: a bill proposing to make English the official language of the U.S.
This time it is H.R. 997, the "English Language Unity Act of 2011". Funny how divisive measures seem to have unifying names.
Rep. John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) spoke in Spanish while delivering his opening statement at a hearing on Aug. 2. And he does a pretty good job.
The reaction from Rep. Steve King (R-IA), the sponsor of the bill?
"I was gonna start out with a Tower of Babel discussion, but I think I’ll pass on that. Mr. Conyers has perhaps made my point for me,” King said, according to Talking Points Memo.
