Betty Smithey, 69, the nation’s longest-serving female inmate, was released from an Arizona prison Monday. Smithey, who served 49 years in Goodyear’s Perryville State Prison, was convicted of the murder of 15-month-old Sandy Gerberick of Phoenix in 1963. Gov. Jan Brewer granted clemency in June, commuting Smithey’s sentence from life without the possibility of parole to 49 years to life.
