Arpaio raises nearly three times as much money as opponents

Campaign finance filings show that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has raised almost $7.5 million dollars for his re-election bid. From Phoenix, Jude Joffe-Block reports that out of state donors are helping his effort.

Sheriff Arpaio is seeking his sixth term in office, and just in the last nine weeks he took in $625,000 dollars in contributions. In contrast, Democratic challenger Paul Penzone, has raised just a fraction of that, less than $224,000, over the entire course of the campaign.

Another contrast between the candidates? Penzone only has a handful of out-of-state donors, while many of Arpaio's contributions come from outside Arizona. The two other candidates in the race, Democrat John Rowan, and Independent Mike Stauffer, have until Friday to file their campaign finance reports.
