TUCSON, Ariz. -- The incoming mayor of a small town in northern Mexico was arrested on drug trafficking charges earlier this month. Arturo Reyes Trujillo was arrested at the request of a federal judge in the United States.

Two weeks ago, news outlets in Sonora were abuzz over the disappearance of Arturo Reyes Trujillo. He is a member of the conservative PAN and he was scheduled to take office in Fronteras, Sonora, Mexico when he suddenly vanished.

Officials at the U.S. Marshal's Office say Reyes was arrested on drug trafficking charges Sept. 6. A federal judge in Phoenix had issued the arrest warrant. Mexican federal police arrested him the next day. But they had stayed silent, fueling speculation and concerns in Sonora.
