FBI agents allege Arizona Attorney General Tom Honre left the scene of a minor car crash because he was having an affair with a female employee, who was in the car he was driving and didn't want their relationship reported.
An FBI report released yesterday says agents learned during a campaing finance investigation that Horne was having an affair with the woman -- Assistant Attorney General Carmen Chenal -- and that they used her apartment as a rendezvous site.
But Horne tells Capitol Meida Services there was no reason for him not to have at least left a note after the accident that agents call a hit-and-run, estimated do have done about $1,000 damage to the other vehicle.
"It's no big deal for me to pay somebody $1,000. The fact that that's a parking area where everyone parks for the restaurant means there's nothing wrong with my having been there. If the guy calls me up and says 'I got your note about the damage' that wouldn't tell you anything about whether I had a passenger or not. Those speculations by the FBI guy are completely baseless," Horne said.
And Horne wonders what the agents were doing following him last March, when they were inevstigating alleged campaign finance violations from 2010. The FBI is declining comment on the matter.
