Achieve Act Lacks Support

Achieve Act Lacks Support

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The day after a Republican alternative to the DREAM Act was announced, it’s already failing to achieve political support.

The Achieve Act is proposed by two retiring Republican senators, Jon Kyl of Arizona and Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas. It’s being called a watered down version of the Dream Act – since it doesn’t provide a path to citizenship.

Texas Senator John Cornyn, who will be the Senate Minority Whip in January, says the Achieve Act is a nice start but he won’t support it. He’d rather tackle a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

“I’m not going to support just a narrow portion of immigration reform, but at the same time I can applaud her I think for making the first step in that direction but we all know nothing is going to happen,” he said.

With both Hutchison and Kyl leaving the Senate there’s little hope of the Achieve Act popping back up in the next Senate session.
