Pinal County Sheriff's Office finds abandoned SUV full of ammo

Law enforcement in Pinal County recovered thousands of rounds of ammunition in an abandoned SUV this weekend.

A Pinal County Sheriff’s deputy patrolling near Stanfield on Saturday saw the car and ran its plates, and after discovering it had been reported stolen from Phoenix, tried to stop the SUV.

After a short chase, the driver fled into the desert. The vehicle was found deserted, with more than 4,500 rounds of .38 caliber ammo stacked in the back.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu’s investigators believe the car was being used to smuggle the rounds. Babeu said that type of ammo is popular in Mexico.
