Texas Takes Water Spat With New Mexico To Supreme Court

The state of Texas wants the U.S. Supreme Court to resolve a major water dispute with neighboring New Mexico.

Texas claims New Mexico is violating a 1938 agreement by siphoning an excess amount of water from the Rio Grande. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality filed a complaint with the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The complaint states the water loss is impacting river flow and hurting farmers in Texas. Earlier, New Mexico filed it's own lawsuit against the Bureau of Reclamation that says it should be entitled to more water.

New Mexico Attorney General Gary King called the Texas suit 'extortion' in a written statement.
