Major U.S. business lobby calls for immigration reform

The president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has made immigration reform a top priority for his organization.

The Chamber calls itself the world’s largest business organization, and says it represents more than 3 million businesses. In a speech Thursday, Chamber president Tom Donohue said the door to the American dream must remain open.

He outlined an immigration reform plan involving border security, a national employer verification database, and a path to citizenship for immigrants in the U.S. illegally. Donohue plans to work with a coalition of several other organizations, including the AFL-CIO, and has met with lawmakers from both major parties.

The Chamber, a major business lobby in Washington , hopes to help push the issue forward. Congress is expected to take up immigration reform in its current session.
