On Friday, the U.S. Border Patrol released official statistics from the 2012 fiscal year.
Here are five interesting takeaways (all links PDF):
1) In 10 years, the Border Patrol’s budget has increased by 150 percent — growing from $1.4 billion in 2002 to $3.5 billion in 2012
2) In 2012, more than two million pounds of marijuana was seized. That's about the weight of 154 adult male elephants.
3) In 20 years, staffing across the Southwest border has grown from 3,496 officers to 18,516. That's about a 429 percent increase.
4) Four out of five minors — 79 percent — apprehended at the Southwest border are unaccompanied. In 2012, the total number was more than 24,000 juveniles.
5) There were 463 deaths across the Southwest border in 2012.
