Abuse of fireworks could mean petty offense

The punishment for the abuse of Arizona 's fireworks laws would be reduced, under a bill approved by the state House.  It makes violations a petty offense, rather than the current misdemeanor.  But, the idea doesn't sit well with Yuma Democrat Lisa Otondo.

“I believe that each city should decide which penalty is best for the use of consumer fibers,” Otondo said. “Isn’t this an attack on local control? And what kind of catastrophe needs to happen for us to open our eyes?”

Violators can face up to six months in jail under current law, along with a $2,500 fine for carelessness with legal fireworks, like sparklers. The bill would lower that to no jail time and a $300 fine. It now goes to the Arizona Senate.
