The Peoria Unified School District is making plans to add another elementary school. The district says it’s needed because of what it says is explosive growth in the northwest Valley. KJZZ’s Al Macias reports.
The Peoria district has announced plans to build a new elementary school to open by the 2014-15 school year. This will be the first new school the district has built in five years.
District officials say the school will be needed to accommodate future housing expansion.
This also means school boundaries in the northern part of the district will be changing.
Starting this month, officials will begin a three-phased plan to change the attendance boundaries for 10 of the districts elementary schools. Funding for the new school will come from earlier voter-approved bonds. District officials say since the bonds have already been sold, there will be no additional impact to taxpayers
The district currently serves 32,000 students in 39 elementary and high schools.
