TUCSON, Ariz. -- Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords appeared Wednesday at the Tucson Safeway where she was shot by gunman two years ago.

Giffords appeared with her husband, Mark Kelly, and some of the survivors of the mass shooting that left six people dead and 13 injured.

Giffords and Kelly formed a political action committee, Americans for Responsible Solutions, last month to push for gun laws that would put limits on high-capacity magazines and assault weapons, and expand background checks for gun purchases.

The event outside the supermarket was held to pressure Arizona Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake to support the group's call for universal background checks for gun purchases.

"In the last two months, Gabby is back. She is back and she is committed to doing whatever it takes,” Kelly said.

The public appearance came just one day before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which Flake is a part of, considers legislation that requires background checks on gun purchases.
