George P. Bush Cites Former First Lady As Inspiration To Run For Land Commissioner

George P. Bush will run for Texas land commissioner in 2014.

For months, there has been speculation surrounding what office Bush — the Latino nephew of one U.S. President and grandson of another — would go after.

Two months after submitting paperwork with the Texas Ethics Commission, which allowed him to raise money for state elections, he raked in $1.3 million.

This was a huge sum for a candidate who had yet to announce his official campaign run.

On Thursday, Bush unveiled his campaign as any savvy politician would — via Twitter:

Great visit with @Patterson4TX. Updated filing. Running for #TXLandComm. Join me at http://GeorgePforTexas.org #TX2014

Bush's tweet was referencing his conversation with the current land commissioner, Jerry Patterson, who plans to run for the lieutenant governor in 2014.

Bush also released a two-minute YouTube video:

Explaining why he decided to run for office, Bush may have foreshadowed a motif in his campaign, his dedication to his powerful family.

“The lesson 'Ganny' [Former First Lady Barbra Bush] taught me was the importance of public service.”
