St. Patrick's Day DUIs decrease from 2012

The Governor's Office of Highway Safety says DUI numbers for the St. Patrick's Day holiday were down from last year with 273 people arrested, compared to 289, a year ago. Office Director Alberto Gutier says the numbers show the effort to combat drunk driving, is working.

“We see more and more sober designated drivers that are identified but also the fact that we hear from people that call and say ‘Well, you know that’s a nice campaign you’re doing, I’m going to get a taxi,” Gutier said.

Gutier does say the overall number of extreme DUIs was still high, at 72. Ninety-two people were arrested for extreme DUI in 2012.
