US Airways and American Airlines merger moves closer to actuality

A done deal. That's how Arizona Senator Jeff Flake describes the merger between Tempe-based US Airways and Texas-based American Airlines. Flake was asked if Phoenix will be hurt economically by the merger, but he did not think so.

“I understand economics and economies of scale, and I don’t know if anybody believes that for one specific location,” Flake said. “Overall the merger will be a good thing for the airline.”

The Justice Department is currently reviewing the deal. Airline officials maintain the combination will be more efficient, lessening the likelihood of higher air fares.
