Mohave County has given the green light to workers who want to carry guns into its administration building in Kingman. The Board of Supervisors passed the measure Monday, only a few weeks after allowing the public to take guns into all county buildings after a three-year ban. All types of guns are now allowed, as long as they are legally owned and in holsters.
Pistols, long guns and semi-automatics may now be carried by the public into government buildings in the county, and that’s what prompted Supervisor Buster Johnson to spearhead an effort to allow employees to do the same. Johnson said he’d rather not see any guns in the buildings but believes if the public is allowed to carry, staff should be allowed to carry. He thinks many employees will.
“You know, it might be a false sense of security,” Johnson said, “but, you know, you don’t want to be the only one at a gun fight without a gun.”
It’s not that he believes violence is likely at the Kingman buildings, he stressed, but he doesn’t want to create a class of people barred from protecting themselves. Currently, employees are only allowed to be armed in the administration building in Kingman, but the board will soon vote on including all county buildings.
