Mark Brnovich may run against Attorney General Tom Horne

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne may be facing a challenger in the Republican Primary next year. That challenge could come from Mark Brnovich, a former state and federal prosecutor who currently heads the Arizona Gaming Department. Horne faces a charge of leaving the scene of an accident witnessed by FBI agents who were tailing him, and of campaign violations in 2010. But, Brnovich is not saying whether those issues will factor into his decision to run or not.

“I have been asked by people I know and respect to consider this,” Brnovich said. “I don’t want to get into any details of any conversations I have had or haven’t had with folks.”

GOP political strategist Chuck Coughlin acknowledges Horne's problems but says he also has the benefits of incumbency, which will give Horne the ability to set the media agenda with things like personally arguing before the US Supreme Court, that Arizona has a right to demand proof of citizenship when people register to vote. Coughlin says for many that could be the ultimate trump card. Horne declined comment for this story.
