The Arizona Department of Transportation has been awarded a grant to help repair damage on U.S. 89, south of Page.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has approved $35 million in emergency relief for repairs to the roadway, which collapsed in February.
Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick says that’s a major step in the right direction because U.S. 89 is critical to the rural communities around Page, and to the area’s tourist trade.
The collapse and closure of that section of highway has created major delays for school buses, emergency responders, employers and employees of Page-based businesses and has led to increased costs for deliveries and gas in the area.
ADOT has been working with Native American officials to pave a section of Tribal Route 20 as a temporary route around the collapse.
