Fronteras Desk Lands In Nicaragua

KJZZ General Manager Jim Paluzzi, right, joins Fronteras Desk for a reporting trip in Nicaragua.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — I've been on reporting teams for Fronteras Desk that have touched ground in Guatemala; I've edited pieces from my desk in Phoenix from our reporters working in Mexico City; and more than a few times I've crossed "the line" between Mexico and the United States with talented journalists who know this beat as well as anyone.

I'm happy to report: We've now touched down in Nicaragua.

Today I walked a finca — a farm — where plantains and pineapples grow. We also discovered a fruit (new to us) called zapote. It's red, and creamy inside with a pit that resembles an avocado.

You'll hear more about Managua when we file our stories. For now, it's enough to say that Fronteras Desk is in Central America for two weeks. We're further south in this hemisphere than we've ever been. And as we always do, we'll come back with a few tales — reminders of just how connected our seemingly distant worlds really are.
