National forests to implement campfire and smoking restrictions

Campfire and smoking restrictions will go into effect next Wednesday in many national forests around the state.  David Albo of the Tonto National Forest said the recent winds, above-average temperatures and the ongoing drought are all factors in the decision. Albo said the restrictions are important to keep the forests safe from wildfires.

"Smoking campfires, wood, charcoal or stuff that could cause sparks and still have embers blowing around is going to be prohibited," Albo said.

He said petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns and heating devices are permitted.
