Wind stokes mulch fire in South Phoenix

A mulch fire is sending billows of smoke across south Phoenix. Captain Larry Nunez said at 3:00 p.m. Phoenix firefighters were dispatched to an agricultural area near 66 th Avenue and Dobbins Road.

"This is a wind-driven mulch fire, about three to four football fields in length and width," Nunez said. "There are some areas that were threatened. One was a home that was to the north, and one is a wildlife area with large, large trees."

Nunez said fire crews should have the fire out by night fall, but 25 mile per hour wind gusts are making the job more difficult.
