People gambling at the Navajo Nation’s casino in Arizona just got the green light to drink.
Nation President Ben Shelly signed the bill expanding alcohol consumption Monday. The move follows the Navajo Nation Council’s Friday vote to allow drinking on casino floors.
Tribal law permits alcohol sales and consumption only in casino restaurants and at the Navajo Nation's Antelope Point Marina at Lake Powell, but the chief executive of the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise said adding areas where alcohol can be consumed would make the Twin Arrows casino near Flagstaff more competitive.
The expansion does not apply to the Navajos' casinos in New Mexico, where compacts still prohibit drinking in gaming areas.
