Red Cross Opens Shelter After Supai Village Evacuation

The Red Cross has opened a shelter in Peach Springs to help dozens of Havasupai men, women and children who had to be evacuated from Supai Village at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.  Flooding there knocked out their fresh drinking water and ruptured a sewage leak.  Trudy Thompson-Rice is a spokeswoman for the Red Cross.

"We anticipate 150 to 200 members of the Supai tribe will be with us for sheltering, meals and support," Thompson-Rice said.

It is unclear how long the shelter in Peach Springs will need to stay open, but the Red Cross said it is committed for as long as it takes.
