A new study by the Pew Research Center shows that 36 percent of young people are living with their parents. This is the largest share of young people living at home in nearly four decades. The study is based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau
The study cites declining employment, rising college enrollment and declining marriage rates as contributing factors. In 1968, 56 percent of 18 to 31 year olds were married. In 2007 that figure was 27 percent.
On the other hand, a little more than five percent of young people were living with a roommate or child in 1968. Four decades later that number had jumped to 26 percent.
Young men were more likely to be stay at home children as opposed to young women. The study shows that 40 percent of young males were living with their parents as opposed to 32 percent of young females in 2007.
