Notorious Mexican Druglord Released From Prison Early
A Mexican judge has ordered the release of a druglord who is wanted in the United States for the murder of an American federal agent nearly 30 years ago.
Rafael Caro Quintero was sentenced to 40 years in a Mexican prison for the murder of Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique Camarena.
Camarena was kidnapped in Guadalajara and killed in 1985 after investigating Caro Quintero’s marijuana smuggling operations. But earlier this week a judge ruled that Caro Quintero was tried in the wrong court and must be released 12 years early.
A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office said prosecutors are reviewing the possibility of seeking Caro Quintero’s extradition to the U.S. He’s still listed as a fugitive here, wanted for the kidnap and murder as well as drug trafficking and financial crimes.
