Defense Wants Renzi Conviction Overturned

Federal prosecutors want a judge to reject a former Arizona congressman's appeal on corruption charges. Rick Renzi represented what was then Arizona's first congressional district from 2003 until 2009. He decided not to run for re-election after a federal indictment.

Renzi was charged with using his office for personal financial gain and stealing money from a family business to help finance his 2002 election campaign.

Defense attorneys asked a federal judge to reverse his conviction or call a new trial, but the U.S. Attorney's office wants the judge to ignore that request, saying there was ample evidence to support his conviction.

Renzi is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 28.
