Maricopa County Community College District Board To Add Two New Members

The five-member Maricopa County Community College District Board will get two new members next year.  A decision by the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this summer means at large members will be added to the board. The Supreme Court struck down the preclearance portion of the Voting Rights Act in June. That means Arizona and other states no longer need to have changes to voting laws pre-approved by the Department of Justice. Arizona lawmakers approved legislation in 2010 expanding the district board to include two at large members, in addition to the five members elected by district.

The law had been on hold pending approval by DOJ. Now Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne said following the Supreme Court’s decision, the election can go forward. The county elections department said the two new seats will be up for a vote in November 2014.

Maricopa is the largest community college district in the country with more than 260,000 students enrolled for classes this year.
