Average Summer Temperature Sets New Record

If you managed to stick it out these past few months in the Valley, congratulations, you lived through the hottest summer ever on record for Phoenix. According to the National Weather Service, the average temperature in Phoenix for June, July and August was 95.1 degrees. The previous record for average summer high was 94.9, set back in 2007.

This summer and the last two are all listed in the top 10 hottest summers recorded, and the weather service said the urban heat island effect is to blame. Overnight lows are not as low as they used to be, because increasing urbanization makes it hard for cities to cool off.

The average low temperature this summer, 83.7, is the highest of all time. The average high temperature was 106.4.
