The city of Phoenix has to delay the grand opening for Camelback Mountain Echo Canyon recreation area. A shipment of materials has pushed the completion date back for several weeks. Contractors for the renovation of Echo Canyon trailhead are waiting for a steel shipment. The material will be used to build new restrooms and ramadas at the trailhead. City officials said because of the delay, the contractor will need until the end of the year to complete the project.
Echo Canyon was closed in January of this year for much needed upgrades. The renovation was scheduled to be completed by Thanksgiving weekend.
David Urbinato is with Parks and Recreation department and said, “We have 179 miles of other trails without ever leaving the city limits in Phoenix. So, another opportunity to try one of the other trails in our system and the wait will be worth it, because the new site will be beautiful at Camelback.”
A renovated Echo Canyon will have 132 parking spaces, permanent bathrooms, an extended trailhead and a new traffic roundabout at a separate entrance. The department has not set a new opening day.
